So I decided to finally try beating Okami, I ran out of steam last time. I think I figured out a big chunk of the fancy cel-shading technique they used: I think there's a lower-poly model around each object with inward-pointing normals, and a shader on those polys that contributes to the ink-filter. This is pretty clearly what's going on on most of the landscape, and SOME of the characters. I'm so smart.

I love Okami. I haven't beaten it, either, though. I remember killing that like 10 headed thing once, and going to some city, but then it's fuzzy. I should pick it up again.

The "shell with inverted normals" is the classic cel-shading trick, but Okami's going one step more fancy than that because the line weights seem to vary across the shape of objects in a way that doesn't seem like simple non-uniform scaling. Also they use some wacky PS2 framebuffer effect that makes everything kind of bleedy and blurry. It's a lot of tricks happening at once. If I could pore over the source code of any PS2 game, it'd probably be Okami.

Pretty good game too.
